Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for tips.
A senior official stated the vandalism made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
